About Us

We started as a simple group of forest preserve hikers and recreational users that cared deeply about the wild places where we choose to spend our time. Over time, we came to realize that it is up to us to help improve the public lands that we enjoy, making them better for those that follow us. After all, we get so much joy and life-enriching rewards from these places that it is seems only fitting that we do our part to return the favor anyway we can.

Originally we were born from two internet communities (message boards). One, Adkhighpeaks Forum, was founded in 2003, and the other, ADKForum, was acquired in 2007. Through our combined 5000+ membership, we came to realize that, as hikers and primary users of this limited natural resource, we represented a sizable cross-section of consumers. As such, we began to look for ways to improve and have a positive impact on the forest preserve areas we use.

In 2008, we began a grass roots, “pass the hat” effort and with minimal effort we were able to raise $5000 to purchase needed equipment for the Keene Valley Fire Department’s Wilderness Rescue Team, which operates out of the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks. This Foundation was born from that effort. We have since been registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity for the express purpose of raising money to donate to wilderness projects in areas within the NYS Forest Preserve.

Our efforts also focus on providing accurate recreation and educational information for NYS Forest Preserve through our forums. Additionally, many of us spend many hours each year on the trails cleaning up and helping make the woods a better, safer place.

Thanks for taking the time to visit us. We truly hope that your adventures within the great Adirondack and Catskills wilderness touch your heart in the same way that it has touched ours.
